What are Quarks? They are one of the 3 elementary particles and makes up the Proton and the Neutron.
Now let us talk about the types of Quarks.
- Up quark
- Down quark
- Bottom quark
- Top quark
- Charm quark
- Strange quark
The Up and the Down Quarks were the first to be discovered. They make up the Proton and the Neutron.
Now there are 3 Valence Quarks in the Proton as well as the Neutron. 2 Up and 1 Down Quark in Proton and 1 Up and 2 Down Quark in Neutron.
A Up Quark's charge is +2/3. And it has different Mass as well as spin differently than the Down Quark.
A Down Quarks charge is -1/3.
Now a Proton's charge:
+2/3 +2/3 -1/3 ( 2 Up and 1 Down Quark )
=+4/3 -1/3
=+3/3
=1
Now a Neutron's charge:
+2/3 -1/3 -1/3 ( 1 Up and 2 Down Quark )
=+1/3 -1/3
=0
Now there are many other Quarks and Anti-Quarks that exists in the Proton as well as in the Neutron other than the Valence Quarks.
*But there are always 2 more Up Quarks then the Anti-Up Quarks and 1 more Down Quark then the Anti-Down Quarks. And the other Quarks have the same amount of Anti-Quarks and cancel out and only 2 Up Quarks and 1 Down Quark remains.
Now there are colours for these Quarks that exists in the Proton and the Neutron. The three Valence Quarks must be Red, Blue and Green, which when comes together, gives out White.
Now the names for these 6 kinds of Quarks are very different, so let me explain why are they named so:
- The Up and the Down Quarks are named so, because of their components of their spin.
- The Strange Quark is named so, because they were seen in Particle decays that have a slightly longer lifetime.
- The Charm Quark was named so, because they fascinated the Physicists that time.
- And the Bottom and the Top Quarks are named because they were the counter parts of the Up and the Down Quark.
