Electrolysis | What Happens In Electrolysis?

Now Electrolysis is the process of passing electricity into liquids to break down the Atoms. It is a Chemical Process/Change. Now what is that? A chemical change is where a New Substance is created that to in its molecular level.

Now lets see how Electrolysis works!



*Now before diving in remember these few words:

1. Electrodes= Conducting Plates example. Carbon Rods.
2. Electrolyte= Liquid Conductors.
3. Cations= Positively Charged ions.
4. Cathode= One of the Conducting Plate(Attached to the negative terminal of the power supply) which attracts Cations.
5. Anions= Negatively Charged ions.
6. Anode= One of the Conducting Plate(Attached to the positive terminal of the power supply) which attracts Anions.

*Now I will give you a few examples of Electrolyte!

Vinegar contains Acetic Acid(CH3COOH)
Lemon Juice contains Citric Acid(C6H8O7)
Salt Water contains Sodium Chloride(NaCl)
Caustic Soda contains Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH)
Note*Liquid Conductors are Acidic, Basic or Salt in nature.

*Now lets start!
Lets take water as our Electrolyte now dip two Electrodes and make a Complete Circuit. Now we can notice bubbling in the Electrolyte, if we zoom in we can see that Water is H20 and in this Hydrogen(H) is Cations and attracted by Cathode and Oxygen(O) is Anions and attracted by Anode because Unlike electrical charges attracts so here Oxygen ion losses its negative charge and combines with another oxygen ion which also lost its negative charge and becomes Oxygen Gas(O2) and this negative charge travels to the Cathode and attracts Positively charged Hydrogen ions and now the same happens Hydrogen ions losses its Positive charge and combines with another hydrogen ion which also lost its positive charge and becomes Hydrogen Gas(H2).
