The Water Problem

We all must have faced the shortage of water in our homes, haven't we? The Water Problem, which is one of the biggest issues in countries like India is a thing that seriously needs to be resolved. The Government always claims that it tries its best to provide water facilities to the public and local people, especially, but the problem still remains. Millions and billions of people are facing this water problem. No one is there to help them. These cases are even worst in summer or hot seasons where the human body seriously requires an intake of sufficient water everyday. But as there is a saying, the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. The poor people are suffering from water borne diseases that are either caused by consuming contaminated or dirty water which is often not free of germs or lack of consuming of water which also kills the vital organs of a human body.

The Government has a really essential role in providing the water facilities to the public which they are doing on their sayings. But is it so? If the government is trying its best to provide water to the public, then why is it that people are facing water shortages in India. Mind you, not only India, but hundreds of other countries also face this water problem. Let's see what is it and how can we solve this issue.

So, if we think about it carefully, water is actually a pretty scarce resource. Because you can barely survive a day without water. Your body needs water for trillions of purposes. Your body cells, which are the fundamental unit of life are mostly made of water. What if they all dried up? The human body will probably die. And that's not all.

Problem in a nutshell, is that India is water stressed due to changing weather patterns and repeated droughts. So, is nature the only cause who is creating the problem? Well, of course not. Pollution and water wastage are two biggest reasons of why people suffer from water scarcity even today. So how does the water bodies get polluted? People, although knowing that it causes water contamination, throw and dispose a lot of waste solids, liquids, medicines, garbage, harmful substances etc. into the pure clean water bodies. This is foolishness in one sense. Rural people are dying for just a drop of water and rich people are enjoying endless water wasting as if it'll never end. So, yes, all this boils down to one question. Why is water scarce? I gave you 2 human caused reasons. Another reason can be overpopulation. Yes. The more the population, the more the demand of water will increase, of course. A water crisis is a situation where the available potable, unpolluted water within a region is less than that region's needs or demands. Wastage can be another big cause that is exploiting water facilities in the world.

Now to throw some numbers, around 1 billion or 100 crores of people lack access to clean and potable drinking water. And around 3 billion or 300 crores of people are facing the water scarcity problem across the world. The numbers are still alarming. It is also predicted that by 2025, around 70% of the world's population might face water scarcity problem which really is an issue to think upon and act. So, as you might have heard that the Earth, the blue planet has around 70% of water on its surface. Then why are we running out of water? The problem is that 99% of that water is oceanic water or water that is not suitable for us either for drinking or for daily activities like washing etc. Freshwater or potable water is very less compared to that large chunk we have in for the oceanic water. And that too, freshwater is in forms of ice caps and glaciers, underground water and rivers etc. So, it is still very difficult to get pure water. Now go even more deeper, agriculture, industries, factories etc. use freshwater for our daily needs. And what's left is a small amount of freshwater that the whole world is consuming every single day! Can you imagine that! Dividing the 1% of freshwater into trillions of things and then that 0.666% of water is what we get for our daily activities including drinking, washing etc. And we people are wasting that part as well! This thing is so serious that the day is not very far where there will be no water present for us to drink. So, shall we give up?

No! Thankfully, we people have developed certain methods which really are reliable both on small scale and large scale to save water. Let's see some of those methods.
  • Reuse, Reduce And Recycle water as much as you can. How? Reuse water by using the same water you used for an activity again to accomplish other activities until you think your would require more water. Reduce usage of water although you must drink adequate amount of water for yourself. But, yes do not waste water. And finally recycle water by using a shower bucket or by creating a rain garden etc.
  • Check for water leaks in all the water supplies that comes in your house and goes out of your house. Water leaks are one of the most predominant causes of water wastage.
  • Avoid taking showers as they waste a lot of water while you are bathing. How? There are thousands of water droplets that are not utilized by your body while bathing and it just goes down and gets wasted. That's why it is recommended for you to take baths from buckets. Although this might be difficult for those who have a habit of taking baths from showers but it takes about 21 days to make a change and 90 days to develop it into a habit. So, come on! You can do it.
So, these are some few steps that you can follow. Although these may not do anything if only you do it. But what if these steps are followed by billions of people all around the world? This way we can save billions of liters of water everyday! So, do your bit as a part of humanity and if you liked this post, do share so that we can at least save water for the needy. And as always thanks for reading.

One thing that you should NOT assume is that the above scenario is only for India, but it is the situation even in other big and developed countries. This issue is serious and we as an individual need to seriously do something. If you have some opinions then you are welcome to express them here. Your opinion will greatly be appreciated. We are planning to make a new post on the topic of climate change which is actually a serious issue more than the water problem. But this issue expressed above first needs to be comprehended and the methods to prevent this thing needs to be implemented. That's why it is said that Prevention is better than cure. So, what are you thinking about?
