Flash Point

The flash point of certain liquids is the lowest temperature at which the vapour above the liquid can be ignited in air. The vapour burns for a very short time, hence the term, flash point.

Chemists apply the term mainly to liquid petroleum products such as petrol. The flash point is in effect the lowest temperature at which a liquid such as petroleum will burn because below that temperature there is not enough vapour above the liquid surface for combustion to take place. When storing or transporting flammable liquid such as petrol or paraffin which form a vapour easily, it is important to know the flash point for safety reasons.
