The JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE

The James Webb Space Telescope a 10 Billion Dollar Telescope which took 20 Years to develop. This is one of the biggest telescopes ever made! And this could indeed see the Big Bang!


This thing is 100x times more powerful than the Hubble Telescope and the Webb is lighter than the Hubble Telescope.

Yeah so this Webb senses infrared waves which is capable to penetrate through gust clouds. And there is another reason why Webb senses infrared radiations, cause according to Relativity "The space between objects expand and so does Light." So when light waves lengthen it becomes infrared.

Now let's talk about the massive mirror. Now it is massive because when the area increases the picture captured will become more clear. It is made up of 18 hexagonal mirrors. Each one is 1 . 32 Meters. And it was planned that the mirrors will unfold in space! And the 18 pieces would be moved and adjusted according the image it have to capture. Now first the Light is filtered by the primary mirrors, then it is allowed to enter the infrared detector which converts the photon into electrical voltage.

Now this Webb is acquired with 4 tools. The Nircam, Nirspec, Fine Guidance Sensor and Miri.
  • The Nircam is the primary imager. This is equipped with Chronographs. the Chronograph blocks the bright lit stars and allows dimer stars to be captured and studied.
  • Now the Nirspec senses the spectrum of light emitted by a body and with this information we could tell the mass, temperature, chemical composition, etc of any body. Now there are micro shutters which allows us to sense faintly lit objects.
  • The Fine Guidance Sensor allows the Webb to rotate and capture infrared light waves.
  • The Miri senses even longer infrared wave lengths which could pass through thick dust clouds. But Miri could senses its own heat so there is a Cryocooler which cools Miri.

Now the Sun, the Earth and the Moon also release radiation or heat, so to protect the Webb we have a Sun-shield which is 21 meter long and 14 meter across. Now the sun-shield has 5 layers and have gaps between them. It is made up of Kapton which could withstand high temperature and heat. Each layer is coated with Aluminum(Al) and the last 2 layers are coated with a extra layer of Doped Silicone. Now to protect the telescope from the radiations of the Sun, Earth and Moon, it is kept 1.5 million km away from Earth. And it travels in a fixed path called the Second Lagrange Point or L2, it is one of the five positions in which gravity keeps an object moving in a fixed path relative to Earth.
