Solutions, Suspensions and Colloids | Matter | Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Mixtures | Science Specials Week S02 E13

So today we are going to see about Matter, already in our blog we already discussed about this topic! So go and visit it! What Is Matter? | Science Specials Week S01 E07 and Matter, Antimatter, Exotic Matter And Dark Matter | Science Specials Week S02 E05. But now we are going to talk about Matter which is around us! 



Now Matter which is around us is Pure and Impure. Now to impure matter is called Mixture. Now there are 2 types of Mixtures, the first one is a Homogeneous Mixture and Heterogeneous Mixture.

  • Homogeneous Mixture: A mixture in which the particles are evenly distributed ( Uniform Throughout ).
  • Heterogeneous Mixture: A mixture in which particles are not evenly distributed.

Now I totally Forgot to define Pure Substance and Mixture.
  • Pure Substance: A substance which needs a chemical process to separate it.
  • Mixture: A substance which needs a physical process to separate it.

Now if I take a glass of Water and mix it with Salt, we call the Water in this case as Solvent ( The thing which is major ) and the Salt as Solute ( The thing which is minor ).
  • Now if I continue to put salt in it, it will eventually stop to dissolve. This is called Saturated Solution.
  • Now when I heat the Solvent in this case Water will be able to dissolve the Solute, which in this case is Salt. Now this is called the Solubility.

Now let's talk about Solutions, Suspensions and Colloids.
  • Now to become a Solution the mixture must be Homogeneous, particles must be really small less than 1 Nanometer and if we let light in that mixture, the path of the light must not be disturbed.

  • Now to become a Suspension the mixture must be Heterogeneous, particles must be large and must be visible and eventually the paricles must settle down.

  • Now Colloid is a mixture which is not a Solution nor a Suspension. The particles are smaller but Heterogeneous, stable, particles are not visible to the naked eye and the particles can not be filtered.
Now when we talk about Colloids the Solute is called Dispersed Phase and the Solvent is called Dispersed Medium.

  • Now colloids like mist is called a Aerosol. ( Mist is a colloid of Liquid in Gas, the Liquid is Dispersed Phase and the Gas is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like smoke is called a Aerosol. ( Smoke is a colloid of Solid in Gas, the Solid is Dispersed Phase and the Gas is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like shaving cream is called a Foam. ( Shaving Cream is a colloid of Gas in Liquid, the Gas is Dispersed Phase and the Liquid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like milk is called a Emulsion. ( Milk is a colloid of Liquid in Liquid, the Liquid is Dispersed Phase and the Liquid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like mud is called a Sol. ( Mud is a colloid of Solid in Liquid, the Solid is Dispersed Phase and the Liquid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like rubber or pumic stone is called a Foam. ( Rubber is a colloid of Gas in Solid, the Gas is Dispersed Phase and the Solid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like butter or jelly is called a Gel. ( Butter is a colloid of Liquid in Solid, the liquid is Dispersed Phase and the Solid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • Now colloids like gemstone is called a Sol. ( Gemstone is a colloid of Solid in Solid, the Solid is Dispersed Phase and the Solid is the Dispersed Medium)
  • But a Gas in Gas is called a Solution not a Colloid.

Fact Of The Day!


Now the Salt dissolves in water because the salt particles go and stay in the gaps of the water molecules ( Solid's molecules are tightly packed, Liquid's molecules have little gaps between them and Gas's molecules have a lot of space between them). Now when we heat the water the solubility increases because the heat make the molecules to move even faster because of Kinetic Energy and more gaps between the molecules is created.
